Head Coaches: Syracuse: Fran Brown (first year, 8-3) | Miami: Mario Cristobal (third year, 22-14)
Coach Bio: Cristobal was a member of Miami’s 1989 and 1991 National Championship teams. He earned First-team All-Big East Conference honors in 1992 as an offensive tackle. Cristobal signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos but didn’t play for them. He played for two years in NFL Europe before returning to Miami to become a graduate assistant. His first full-time assistant coaching job came at Rutgers for three seasons before returning to Miami for three seasons as an assistant.
His first head coaching job came at FIU. Cristobal led the Panthers to two bowl games in six years, including a conference title in 2010. He was fired after six seasons and immediately joined Alabama as its associate head coach, offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator. After four years, Cristobal joined Oregon as its offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator, but he immediately took over as head coach one year in after Wille Taggart left for Florida State. He took over as head coach of the Ducks for their bowl game in 2017. Afterwards, he led Oregon to bowl games in each season and at least nine wins in each full season. Cristobal left Oregon to return to Miami in 2022 as the program’s head coach.
Last Year: An upset win over No. 23 Texas A&M saw Miami rise as high as No. 17 in the rankings. However, the Hurricanes fell out of the rankings after a heartbreaking loss to Georgia Tech in which Cristobal didn’t kneel out the clock. That was followed by a loss to No. 12 North Carolina. The Hurricanes didn’t win another ranked game that season but won seven games to earn a berth to the Pinstripe Bowl. In a rather cruel twist of irony, Cristobal battled against the first head coach and school who gave him a full-time assistant job in Greg Schiano and Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights overcame the Hurricanes in Yankee Stadium, winning 31-24.
Last Game: Miami only led by three for much of the first half and only by six after three quarters against Wake Forest. However, three touchdowns in the fourth quarter gave the Hurricanes the cushion they needed to pull away from the Demon Deacons. The Hurricanes defense stole the show. Wake Forest failed to gain over 100 yards rushing or over 100 yards passing against Miami.
“Fear Me, I’ve Killed Hundreds of Timelords”: Heard of this Cam Ward guy? He’s only second behind Kyle McCord for passing yards this season with 3,774 yards. He leads the FBS in passing touchdowns with 34 and is the presumed No. 1 quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft.
If Syracuse Wins: The College Football Playoff committee hates to see us coming.
If Syracuse Loses: I hope everyone enjoyed Dom’s articles on this website, because he’s fired now.
Fun Fact: McCord’s 3,946 passing yards this season is not only the leading mark in the FBS. It’s the highest mark in a single season for a Syracuse quarterback. McCord eclipsed Ryan Nassib’s 2012 total of 3,749 passing yards.
