The guard from Saint Mary’s is the fourth Husky to hit the portal this season.
UConn men’s basketball has another player entering the transfer portal. Aidan Mahaney’s decision to hit the portal, announced earlier today, means that the Huskies currently have four players that have opted to transfer. Mahaney joins Isaiah Abraham, Ahmad Nowell and Youssouf Singare in the transfer portal.
Mahaney was one of the top guards in the portal last season, and came two UConn after two impressive seasons at Saint Mary’s, but never really got going in his one year in Storrs. He started the Huskies’ first five games of the season, but was dropped from the starting lineup following UConn’s loss to Memphis in the Maui Invitational.
Following the Memphis game, Mahaney played 20 or more minutes just two times in UConn’s remaining 30 games. Despite the significant role change, Mahaney still managed to make an impact throughout the season. His best performance came in the Huskies’ win over Baylor, where Mahaney scored nine points and served as a major spark off the bench to help UConn take down the Bears.
Mahaney still managed to reach double digits six times this season, including a season-high 15 against Providence on Jan. 5. He finished the season averaging 4.5 points and 1.3 assists per game, nearly 10 points per game less than he averaged at Saint Mary’s. While Mahaney was an effective scorer, his propensity for fouling and hit-or-miss defense, plus the emergence of Hassan Diarra and Solo Ball, slowly squeezed Mahaney out of significant minutes.
These four transfers, plus Liam McNeeley’s decision to declare for the NBA Draft, gives UConn at least six possible scholarships for this coming season.
