The college football video game is back! Here’s what to expect from the UConn experience in the game.
After a 10-year hiatus, EA Sports’ college football franchise has returned. College Football 25 was released to much fanfare in July, featuring all 134 FBS teams, including UConn. Not only does it include the Huskies’ logos, uniforms, and stadium, like previous iterations of the game, it now features full rosters with real players thanks to NIL.
Gone are the days of RB #23 who looks like Jordan Todman, has all the same ratings that Jordan Todman would have, but most definitely isn’t Jordan Todman (for legal reasons). Now, the players have their real names. We can play with returning stars like Jelani Stafford or Victor Rosa, and check out what some of the new transfer recruits have to offer as well.
Let’s dive in.
Ratings
As a team, UConn is rated 76 overall with a 71 offense and a 72 defense. That puts the Huskies in the same company as Army (76 overall), Florida Atlantic, FIU (77 overall), Navy (76 overall), and Utah State (77 overall).
Looking at UConn’s 2024 schedule, it’ll face Maryland (80 overall), Duke (80 overall), Florida Atlantic (77 overall), Buffalo (73 overall), Temple (73 overall), Wake Forest (84 overall), Rice (77 overall), Georgia State (73 overall), UAB (77 overall), Syracuse (85 overall) and UMass (76 overall). From the game’s perspective, the Huskies are better than three of their FBS opponents, comparable to four, and a cut below the remaining three (note: FCS teams are not featured in the game, so Merrimack is not included here).
Individually, UConn’s highest-rated player is right tackle Chase Lundt at 82 overall with Jelani Stafford (81) and TJ Sheffield (80) the only others also above 80. Starting quarterback Nick Evers is a 75 overall.
Running back Victor Rosa (77 overall) is the fastest player on the team with 93 speed while defensive tackle Jayden Simon is the strongest with a 95 strength.
Uniforms
UConn’s uniform options are pretty limited. Aside from the helmets, there’s only a stock-standard flag blue and white version of the jersey, pants, and socks — no throwbacks or alternates.
There are also just three helmet options: A flag blue helmet and facemask with the standard husky logo, a second flag blue helmet with the Block C logo and white facemask, and a white helmet with the husky and flag blue facemask. It’s worth noting that there should be a fourth helmet option, presumably a white helmet with the Block C logo. In the uniform customization screen, there’s four helmets available, including a second white one. However, it’s identical to the other white helmet.
The reason the Huskies’ uniform choices are so thin likely has to do with the fact that they don’t use anything beyond their flag blue/white sets. There’s no alternate or throwback currently in use — UConn just mixes and matches the options they have.
A few more choices would be nice, though. NCAA Football 14 featured uniforms from the Dan Orlovsky era, the Fiesta Bowl era, and the late Pasqualoni, early Diaco era. If EA Sports wanted to get really creative, it’d be fun to have a look or two from the Huskies’ Division-1AA days, whether it be the script “UConn” from the 1980s or the “C shaped like a football” look from the ‘70s. The Huskies may not have a great track record of success, but they have plenty of history to look towards.
Rentschler Field
The game made sure the structure of Pratt & Whitney Stadium and Rentschler Field is correct, but they didn’t spend much time on the finer details.
All the field logos are in the wrong spot — the Husky logo at midfield faces the wrong direction while the endzone lettering is swapped. “Connecticut” is in front of the student section while “Huskies” is down the other end, when it should be the opposite.
The large superstructure on the south side of the stadium (where the suites, TV camera, and press boxes are located) also doesn’t have any of UConn’s bowl game banners. Another notable omission: The Jasper Howard memorial underneath the video board isn’t there.
The game also features “dynamic attendance”, which means crowd sizes change depending on the performance of the team in game modes such as Dynasty or Road to Glory. That means The Rent can look pretty empty at times.
Other features
- UConn has two official rivals in the game: UMass and, get this, UCF. Yes, the legendary Civil ConFLiCT is real in the eyes of EA Sports. Eat your hearts out, haters.
- When loading into a game at Rentschler Field, the basketball programs get a shoutout: “Welcome to East Hartford, home to the UConn Huskies, where basketball has a championship pedigree and there’s plenty of enthusiasm for football as well,” Rece Davis says.
- The UConn playbook appeared limited in the first iteration of the game but subsequent updates have added more plays and formations.
