The forward will miss her second straight season due to injury.
Ayanna Patterson’s season is over. On Monday, the redshirt sophomore underwent successful surgery at UConn Health to repair a shoulder injury, the team announced on Tuesday. She’ll miss the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign.
Patterson initially suffered the injury in October but worked her way back and even warmed up with the Huskies before they played Oregon State in The Bahamas. The next day, she suffered a setback that eventually led to the surgery.
This is second straight season that Patterson has missed due to injury after dealing with a knee issue that ultimately required surgery last year. Patterson’s most recent game action was in the 2023 Sweet Sixteen vs. Ohio State.
As a freshman, the 6-2 forward from Fort Wayne, Indiana played in 30 contests, averaging 2.2 points and 2.2 rebounds in 10.1 minutes. She started strong as a physical, high-energy post off the bench before knee tendinitis slowly ate away at her playing time as the season progressed. Patterson arrived in Storrs as the No. 4 recruit in the class of 2022.
With this news, UConn will have no more 13 players available for the remainder of the season, though Caroline Ducharme (head) remains out indefinitely, Aubrey Griffin (torn ACL) isn’t expected to return until January while Azzi Fudd (minor knee sprain) is day-to-day.
This is the fourth straight season that the Huskies have had a season-ending injury. Aubrey Griffin missed the entire 2021-22 campaign with back problems, Paige Bueckers and Ice Brady sat out 2022-23 with knee injuries, while Patterson, Griffin, Azzi Fudd and Caroline Ducharme all went down last year.
