UConn cruised past St. John’s 78-40 on Wednesday night at Gampel Pavilion, becoming the first team to score over 75 points against the Red Storm this season.
Azzi Fudd led the way for the Huskies, setting a new career high with 34 points — and the most by any UConn player since 2021-22. She made eight threes on the night, shooting an efficient 8-14 from deep.
Paige Bueckers added 16 points in the win on 6-9 shooting from the field. She also impressed on the defensive end, adding six rebounds, four steals and a career-high tying five blocks.
Aubrey Griffin also played a season-high 21 minutes, reaching double figures for the first time since returning from her ACL injury. she tallied a team-high nine boards to go along with her ten points, three blocks and two steals.
UConn jumped out to the lead with an 11-0 run early in the first quarter. That spurt was sparked by a hot start from Fudd, who rebounded from a quiet outing against Tennessee with ten of the Huskies’ first 16 points. By the end of the first quarter, UConn had extended its lead to double figures with Fudd up to 13 points, including three triples.
Bueckers also had a strong start to the game, tallying 12 points in the first half. While her offense was clicking, so was her defense. Bueckers tied her career high in blocks (five) in the first 20 minutes against St. John’s and also added five rebounds.
Behind the strong scoring effort from Bueckers and Fudd, who increased her total to 17 points by halftime, UConn took a 25-point margin into the break.
Jana El Alfy had a strong showing in the first half for the Huskies. The redshirt freshman led the team on the boards with six rebounds, including four on the offensive end. El Alfy also chipped in seven points on 3-5 shooting in the first half.
Fudd continued her career night in the third quarter, outscoring St. John’s 17-13 by herself in the frame. She was 6-8 from the floor in the third to reach her total of 34 points.
With big efforts from Fudd and Buckers, it was a quiet scoring night from Sarah Strong. Strong still impacted the game by adding seven rebounds and three steals.
All ten available Huskies saw the court in the win. UConn continued to be without Ice Brady (shoulder) while Morgan Cheli was also sidelined with a boot on her right foot.
UConn is back in action on Sunday afternoon with another break from Big East play when it heads to Columbia to take on No. 3 South Carolina.
