It appears the transfer departure list for UConn will not include many major contributors.
UConn running back Cam Edwards announced Friday via X that he will be returning to play for the Huskies in 2025.
Edwards had a number of options. He could have declared for the NFL Draft or hit the portal after two successful seasons at UConn. For now, it looks like Edwards is staying put.
This past season, Edwards rushed for 756 yards on 129 carries and seven touchdowns. His best game came in the finale at UMass, where he racked up 145 yards from scrimmage and two total touchdowns. In two full seasons, Edwards has tallied over 1,300 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns in 21 games.
The Huskies have already lost a handful of players to the transfer portal, including Edwards’ backfield counterpart in freshman Durell Robinson, who recently announced his commitment to Auburn in the SEC. Like Edwards, Robinson rushed for over 700 yards in 2024. Mel Brown, a senior next season, who rushed for 551 yards and two touchdowns on 99 attempts this year.
UConn also might say goodbye to defensive end Pryce Yates and wide receiver Brock Montogmery, who both announced their entry to the portal.
Edwards’ return is a major win for head coach Jim Mora and staff, as the Huskies look to replicate the success the team has had moving into 2025. Currently 8-4 on the year, one more win would tie the program’s best finish since 2007. Head coach Jim Mora has said that many of the players who put their names in the portal will plan to play in the bowl game anyway.
