Bueckers is the presumed No. 1 pick in the 2025 WNBA Draft.
The Dallas Wings won the WNBA Draft lottery on Sunday, putting them in position to land Paige Bueckers in the 2025 draft. The UConn superstar has already said this will be her final year in college and is the presumed No. 1 pick.
The Wings haven’t had much success since moving to the Lone Star State. While the franchise has three WNBA titles in 2003, 2006 and 2008, all those came as the Detroit Shock. In their nine seasons in Dallas, they’ve made the playoffs five times and have only advanced past the first round once.
The team doesn’t currently have a head coach after firing Latricia Trammel following her second season in charge. No coach has lasted three full seasons in Dallas and the last three coaches all lasted just two years. The Wings did just hire former Los Angeles Sparks and Connecticut Sun head coach Curt Miller as general manager.
While it’s not an ideal situation for Bueckers, Geno Auriemma isn’t worried.
“I hope she goes to a team that she is exactly what they need, whatever that team is,” he said last month. “Paige is going to be alright wherever she goes.”
It’s still possible Bueckers ends up somewhere else, too. The Wings could trade the pick or they could selected former Stanford and current USC star Kiki Iriafen instead.
The last UConn player taken No. 1 overall was Breanna Stewart back in 2016. Five Huskies have been selected with the top pick in the league’s history.
