The Huskies grab a defensive back from one of the best defenses in the country.
UConn football has added its second high-profile transfer in the last two days with the commitment of former Penn State safety Tyrece Mills.
Coming out of high school, Mills held a three-star rating as a prospect. The safety began his college football career playing in junior college, playing one game for Lackawanna Community College in 2021 before transferring to Penn State in 2022.
In his first season in Happy Valley, Mills redshirted, granting him the extra year of eligibility he is using now to join the Huskies. In 2023, the defensive back played two games before seeing a jump in playing time in 2024. In Penn State’s run to the CFB semi-finals, Mills appeared in 13 games, recording 15 tackles and one interception — a memorable pick late in the game to secure the Nittany Lions’ win over Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.
While Mills may have one year of eligibility remaining, his addition to UConn’s secondary certainly bolsters the team’s defensive outlook for next season. Much like Ty Chan — the former Notre Dame offensive lineman who announced he was transferring to UConn earlier this week — Mills will most likely slot right into a starting role for the Huskies.
Mills’ and Chan’s commitments to Jim Mora and the Huskies prove UConn’s recent success has put the program on the map, making the school a desirable destination for high-profile portal talent.
