Williams is back in the WNBA after winning a silver medal with France at the Olympics.
Gabby Williams is back in the WNBA. After missing out on the first half while focusing on her national team duties with France ahead of a home Olympics — in which the hosts claimed silver — Williams signed with the Seattle Storm for the remainder of the season. She previously suited up in the thunder green and lightning yellow during the 2022 and 2023 campaigns.
Williams will re-join the team next week and wear No. 5.
“I’m so excited to be joining the Storm for the rest of the season,” she said in a release. “I feel more than ready to finally return to Seattle. I’ve missed the organization, my teammates and the fans so much. I absolutely can’t wait to come back and finish the season strong.”
Since she wasn’t under contract with a WNBA team and her club season in Europe ended in prior to May 1, Williams wasn’t subject to the league’s strict prioritization rules. Once the Olympics concluded, she was free to re-join any team in the league.
During the Paris games, Williams played some of the best basketball of her professional career. She averaged 15.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 2.8 steals while winning the tournament’s best defensive player award.
Williams did all she could to bring a gold medal to France as well. In the final, she hit a 3-pointer in the dying seconds to cut Team USA’s lead to one, then hit another shot at the buzzer — only to have her foot on the line, which secured a one-point victory for the Americans.
During Williams’ five years in the WNBA, she’s averaged 7.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals. She appeared in just 10 games last season after signing with the Storm mid-season once she recovered from a concussion suffered in Europe.
Williams joins fellow UConn alum Nika Mühl in Seattle and is the 18th former Husky in the league at the moment. All 12 WNBA teams have at least one UConn player on its roster.
