Though his initial depth chart was unclear, head coach Jim Mora has named the Wisconsin transfer the starter under center.
UConn football will have a new starter under center once again as Wisconsin transfer Nick Evers has been named the starting quarterback. Head coach Jim Mora reluctantly shared the news in his Tuesday press conference ahead of Saturday’s season opener against Maryland.
Mora initially said he wanted to wait until gameday to reveal the starter, adding that the team and players have been informed. Though Joseph Fagnano, who transferred from Maine last season, has built up confidence from the staff, the newcomer Evers, a redshirt sophomore, is handed the reins of what UConn hopes will be a new-look offense.
Following the departure of Nick Charlton, offensive line coach Gordon Sammis has been elevated to the offensive coordinator position, who brought in QB coach Brad Robbins to fill the opening. Sammis’ offensive line has been the strongest and most consistent unit on the team over the Mora era, and that success has been rewarded. The Huskies have also reshaped their wide receiver room, with the UConn depth chart showing just one returning player from last year at that position.
Running backs Cam Edwards and Victor Rosa are a year older, stronger, and wiser, which should take a lot of heat off of Evers’ shoulders. He may have some growing pains as he gets his first start since high school, but the Huskies’ coaching staff believes in his arm strength and playmaking ability. He’s as promising a recruit as UConn has ever had at the position.
The Huskies kick off their 2024 campaign at SECU Stadium in College Park, Maryland this Saturday at noon. The game will be televised on FS1.
