The Huskies turned in a dominant victory to start their six-game home stand.
The UConn Huskies crushed the FAU Owls on Saturday night at the Rent, 48-14, to improve to 2-2 on the season.
The Huskies finished with a program FBS record 422 rushing yards as they out-gained the Owls, 543-212, and had 31 first downs while allowing just eight.
UConn was in control from the start, even though it was only 3-0 after the first quarter. Nick Evers led the Huskies to a field goal on their opening drive, but he fumbled on a QB run to stop the second drive in its tracks.
FAU only managed one first down in its first three drives and on the third UConn drive, Evers hit Skyler Bell for a 43-yard bomb to set up a touchdown pass to Mel Brown that capped off an 80-yard drive early in the second quarter and made it 10-0.
The UConn defense kept making stops and the offense continued to capitalize. After another FAU punt, the Huskies drove 91 yards on a 12-play drive that saw 10 runs as Durell Robinson finished it off with an eight-yard rush for the score. The 17-0 score held into halftime.
The Huskies got the ball to start the second half and quickly added to their lead, driving 75 yards for another TD, this time from Evers on the ground, and added another field goal to make it 27-0 in the third quarter.
FAU got its first TD with 2:17 left in the third, making it 27-7 after 45 minutes. By that point, UConn had rotated some backups in on defense.
From there, the Huskies closed it out with another Evers rushing touchdown to make it 34-7, set up by a 45-yard rush by Brown. Robinson got another touchdown to make it 41-7 and then FAU got another TD on a long run to complete the visitors’ scoring on the night. On a 4th down play with the backups in, QB Joe Fagnano hit Shamar Porter for a 33-yard touchdown to get us to the final score.
Robinson finished with 157 yards on the ground on 16 carries while Brown added 156 on 21 carries. Evers proved his dual-threat chops, with 88 yards through the air and 78 on the ground. He didn’t need to throw much in the second half.
Next up, the Huskies have their second game of the six-game home stand, against Buffalo with kick-off at noon from the Rent. The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
