Azzi Fudd led the Huskies with 21 points in her return home.
A strong second half pulled UConn women’s basketball past the Georgetown Hoyas 73-55 on Saturday in Washington, DC. The Huskies only led by five at the half but out-scored the Hoyas 35-22 in the second half to secure the victory.
Arlington, Virginia native Azzi Fudd returned home for the first time in her collegiate career and finished with a team-high 21 points and five 3-pointers. Sarah Strong stuffed the stat sheet with 16 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals while Ashlynn Shade also reached double-figures with 12 points.
The Huskies were without Paige Bueckers (knee sprain) for the second-straight game while Ice Brady didn’t travel with the team due to an illness.
Georgetown couldn’t miss in the early going. The Hoyas made four of their first six shots from deep — including one from Ariel Jenkins, who came in with just five triples all season — to take a 16-8 lead. Unfazed, UConn slowly chipped away at the deficit and pulled within one by closing the first quarter on a 9-2 run.
The Huskies took a lead on their first possession of the second quarter but Georgetown grabbed it right back with a 3-pointer down the other end. The two sides traded baskets until UConn scored five straight points then followed it up with an 8-0 run later in the period. Those bursts sent the Huskies into the locker room ahead 38-33.
Out the locker room, UConn finally started to pull away and out-scored the hosts by nine in the third quarter. Georgetown opened the final frame with a 3-pointer, only for Fudd to respond with back-to-back triples herself. In the end, the Huskies walked out with an 18-point victory — their narrowest in Big East play so far.
Next, UConn will travel to St. John’s on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. ET on SNY.
