The Huskies’ offense had a banner day in the victory.
UConn women’s basketball put on an offensive clinic on Sunday, beating the Butler Bulldogs 101-59 at the XL Center.
The Huskies tied a season-high in points while six players reached double-figures. As a team, they shot 64.5 percent from the field.
Paige Bueckers led the way with 18 points while Azzi Fudd put up 13 points thanks to a 3-4 day from three. Ashlynn Shade also had 13 points with a 5-7 performance from the field, KK Arnold scored 12 points on a perfect 6-6 shooting, Sarah Strong totaled 11 points with just one miss and Jana El Alfy hit 10 points.
Defensively, UConn struggled to defend the perimeter and allowed Butler to shoot 44.4 from three. However, the Huskies limited the visitors to a 9-31 day inside the arc and also forced 22 turnovers.
UConn cruised from the opening tip. The Huskies made their first six baskets and forced turnovers on Butler’s first two possessions down the other end. When the Bulldogs finally got a shot off, they hit 4-5 to open the game but then went cold with a 1-10 skid.
In the second quarter, UConn put together a 7-0 run then followed it up with another 18-2 spurt to close the half. The Huskies went into the locker room up 59-26.
Out of the break, UConn struggled to pull away initially and only out-scored Butler 12-10 through the first five minutes of the quarter. Then the Huskies re-found their groove and extended the lead to 40 entering the final period.
With the reserves running the show in the fourth quarter, UConn ended up with a 42-point victory.
The Huskies improve to 21-2 overall and 12-0 in the Big East with the win. Next up, UConn will get a break from conference play when it travels to take on former arch-rival Tennessee. Tip-off is set for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
