Solid pick. This was a loaded Draft at Defensive Tackle (and Tight End and Running Back). So it made a ton of sense, after trading back into Round 1 for a QB, to go for a Defensive Tackle if there was one which worked for the Giants. We specifically called for this yesterday, asking for DT to help Carter and the run game.
Wonder gave us his top 11 DTs. Alexander was 8th on his list. Separately, Darius Alexander was also one of Big Blue Banter podcast’s “My Guys.” So he is well respected by the people we respect. He might have been taken a little early, as Wonder still has some remaining questions with his lack of college pedigree at Toledo. Dan and Nick put that to bed by noting his “standout” Senior Bowl performance. “Explosive interior rusher. Elite traits- length, speed, and disruptive ability against both pass and run. His Senior Bowl dominance confirmed he can excel against NFL-level competition, but his low production and age (24) create risk. 3-gap shooter with long arms and twitchy movement.”
Carter, Alexander, Lawrence, Burns, Thibodeaux. That is a helluva DL. Together with that young and blooming Defensive Secondary, plus Okereke and McFadden, this can be a vastly improved and exciting defense. It begins in the trenches. The Giants have potentially as many as FIVE playmakers. Add Golston in a situational rotation. It is a very good way to set the tone.
QB, Protect QB, Rush the QB.
Jaxson Dart, ________, Abdul Carter and Darius Alexander. So it is time to get OL trenches. G Marcus Mbow by some miracle available at 4.05?
And then in Round 5, there will still be a plethora of Running Backs that are very good who will still be available.
One more thing…. Carter, Dart and Alexander all were NY Giants Top 30 visits.
