Xavier McKinney, Green Bay Packers, Agree to Contract
Safety Xavier McKinney had the best year of his young career during the final year of his contract. As one of two defenders on the New York Giants to not miss a single snap, McKinney finished the season with three interceptions, 11 passes defended, 0.5 sacks, 116 tackles, 38 tackles-for-loss, and an impressive 87.8 PFF grade. While the Giants themselves had a rough season, McKinney’s PFF grade was the fourth-best mark among 95 eligible safeties.
Xavier McKinney originally entered the league as a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Selected by the New York Giants, the Alabama product had a rough start to his professional career. The rookie suffered a fractured foot before the season, landing him on the short-term injured reserve. While he eventually made his way back to the field, he only played in six games, recording one interception, 25 tackles, and one tackle-for-loss in his limited action.
Now fully healthy, Xavier McKinney established himself as one of the better safeties in the 2021 NFL Draft. Appearing in all 17 games, the Alabama product finished the season with five interceptions, 10 passes defended, 93 tackles, and one tackle-for-loss. Unfortunately, the Giants themselves went 4-13 and fired head coach Joe Judge after the season.
Xavier McKinney returned to his starting role under new head coach Brian Daboll and remained his reliable self through the first eight games of the season. However, the former second-round pick injured himself in an ATV accident during the team’s bye week, landing him on the short-term injured reserve.
Since signing his rookie contract, Xavier McKinney has started and appeared in 46 games. While on the field, the Alabama product has recorded nine interceptions, 1.5 sacks, 279 tackles, and six tackles-for-loss.
