Rob Wall asks: “I’m too young to remember but how does this “low” that we are in for last 10 years compare to the 70’s (pre G. Young)?”
It feels similar in many ways. A once proud franchise that lost its way. Check. Dysfunction. Check. Persistent uncompetitiveness. Check. Depressed fans. Check.
I remember watching the playoffs in the 1970’s with the same sense that I have now… my team is on the outside looking in at teams that play consistently well. I really didn’t have that feeling creep in until recent years when the Giants started consistently putting up 3 to 6 win seasons. (Seven of the past eight seasons have been 3 to 6 wins.)
A QB can turn things around quickly. QB hell can keep you .. in hell.
Ownership is a headwind. Mara is his own worst enemy, in a net result not all that different from the 1970s when Wellington and Tim Mara were feuding. I’ve posted recently about some of the issues with Mara. He is a structural impediment to success.
I love the Divisional round. It’s great football. I watched the Steelers-Raiders games and they were epic battles. Dallas, Minnesota and Miami rounded it out. It was the best weekend of the year to be a sports fan.
The Divisional round is still my favorite sports weekend. Tomorrow’s game between BUF and BAL promises to be one of those epic struggles. Mahomes has a Staubach feel, except Staubach lost 5 years of playing time to the Navy. So imagine Mahomes coming into the NFL and starting his career at 27 or 28. That was Rodger Dodger. Next week we will have KC vs the winner of that BUF/BAL game. I think it’ll be epic too. How many times are these 3 franchises battling it out? Yes, it feels a little like OAK-PIT-MIA.
Add the banner flying over the stadium. It’s the 1970’s all right. Where have you gone, Phil Simms, Giants fans turn their lonely eyes to you.
