The Chiefs or Chargers may snatch Cowboys trade candidate running back, Khalil Herbert this season. According to a report, the Cowboys still need help bolstering their backfield regardless of adding two veterans Ezekiel Elliott and Dalvin Cook. This rings true but no one has seen what Cook can do, but many should anticipate he won’t promise anything less than 1,000 yards this season. Mike Fisher of Athlon Sports believes Herbert has plenty of promise and can fit into a role in Dallas’ backfield.
Last season, he was able to average 5.7 yards per carry but his low $1.08 million cap hit makes him an attractive cost-effective option. It’s not only a great rental for Dallas but many teams like the Chiefs who need some extra depth. Herbert isn’t special like a superstar but he’s a proven weapon that can help a team if they need help. He’s a temporary replacement and even if they place him behind Isiah Pacheco, he could still be effective.
The Cowboys are not looking to add running back help which opens the door for other teams to consider Herbert. Kansas City may be adding Kareem Hunt for additional help behind Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Carson Steele but Herbert could be the best active running back on their roster. According to one source, he’s a “pure runner” who can generate his yardage to boost momentum for any team. Herbert probably isn’t getting any more shine in Chicago so he should move since D’Andre Swift is getting the majority of playing time.

More Help For Chargers Running Game
The running game is going to be a critical factor at this stage since Justin Herbert is dealing with a high-ankle sprain. Los Angeles doesn’t anticipate relying on passing the football so it might be best to let Herbert heal and utilize running the football. J.K. Dobbins and Gus Edwards are fine temporary replacements after Austin Ekeler’s exit but they need someone who could establish as the premiere man. Herbert is a healthy scratch and he’s cheap so those are the factors they should consider getting.
It may be safe to get him in the mix with Dobbins and Edwards since both have a long history of injuries. Herbert probably won’t win the starting role this season but he can be an effective ball hog to scramble for those yards behind one of the best offensive lines today.
Other Potential Trade Destinations
Baltimore Ravens
Lamar Jackson has been utilizing running back Justice Hill for his quick passing game. This is why they need someone else other than Derrick Henry to get some help in the backfield. Henry can’t do it alone and since Keaton Mitchell probably won’t come back until next season it’s safe to bet on Herbert. He would excel in a championship mindset roster that needs extra depth.
Carolina Panthers
Carolina needs a new lifeline after the season they’re enduring. There’s no guarantee that Miles Sanders will be on the roster for much longer since he’s excelling behind the Panthers coaching staff. The same case is happening for Bryce Young, Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen. Herbert isn’t the fastest but he could carve out a role behind Chuba Hubbard and be a mentor for Jonathon Brooks.
New York Giants
Devin Singletary might become a potential trade candidate if the Giants continue losing. This means they would need some type of experienced running back on their roster. Herbert isn’t near veteran status but he’s a bargaining chip that can become the new starter for whatever future that holds in New York.
