The true score was CIN 10 NYG 7.
Not ready for primetime. Again.
When Jones gets pressure, he simply doesn’t perform. DT Sheldon Rankins and DT BJ Hill were back for Cincinnati, and that caused Jones to have less time to go through his progressions. And that’s when we see Bad Jones.
Watching BJ Hill torment the Giants is another reminder that the curse of Dave Gettleman is still with us. He was traded in August 2021 for Billy Price in Gettleman’s last ditch effort to save the OL. Price (along with Gettleman) was out of NY in 1 season and out of the NFL after one more year thereafter. F you Dave.
The list of big mistakes
- 3rd & 18 and Burrow scampers 47 yards for a TD
- Jones drives the team to the red zone, only to have his arm deflected by BJ Hill, resulting in an INT. Bad Jones.
- 57 yard pass play to Slayton negated by Andrew Thomas illegal downfield on RPO
- Missed 47 yd FG in Q4
- Missed 45 yd FG in late Q4
Flott did a good job of limiting Chase. Chase is going to get his. A big pass play only happened because Burrow evaded the rush and had too much time.
Okereke caused a holding call on 3rd and Goal from the 1, and Dexter Lawrence got the sack on the next play. This saved 4 pts, making it a winnable game at only 10-7. The Giants offense couldn’t close.
The rookies are still looking good. Tyrone Tracy, Theo Johnson and Tyler Nubin were active. Tracy is, pound for pound, making a consistent impact. Phillips had a nice open field tackle.
The Defense played great beyond the first series blown coverage of Burrow. Burns, Ojulari and Lawrence all had very good pressure. The Bengals offense is very good and the Defense played well enough to win. The final 7 points were really in reverse garbage time when the Giants were selling out when they were done.
Hyatt is simply a disappointment. He doesn’t run through his route. He takes the wrong route on the hot read.
Jones and Slayton were good but at crunch time with 3:30 left they fell short on 4th down. Jones was tracking his first read and Slayton was covered. Bad Jones.
Will the Giants offense be better with Nabers? Yes. Yet when Jones has any pressure he cannot make it through his progressions. The positives are the Defense, and the rookies. The negative is the future of the QB position.
