The New York Giants will be in the market for a new franchise quarterback this offseason. Among the top targets for them to consider is Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders.
However, drafting Sanders is easier said than done. In addition to being at risk of missing out on him with the No. 3 overall pick, the Giants also have to worry about Sanders’s father Deion blocking him from going to the Big Apple.
Giants could target QB Shedeur Sanders in the NFL Draft
Sanders is projected to be one of the top two quarterbacks in this upcoming draft class. He could wind up being the first player off the board in April with the quarterback-needy Tennessee Titans holding the No. 1 overall pick. But if he makes it past Tennessee, and then makes it past the Cleveland Browns who are picking second, Sanders could be the Giants’ selection with the third-overall pick.
Deion Sanders won’t let his son play for certain NFL teams
However, Deion Sanders has made it clear that he won’t let just any team draft his son Shedeur. Deion, an NFL Hall of Fame player and the current head coach of the University of Colorado, has made it clear that he will be involved with Shedeur’s draft process:
“It’s a couple teams that I won’t allow him to play for,” Deion said on the Tamron Hall Show (h/t Giants Wire). “But this is my profession. I know what’s behind the curtain. We ain’t got to get back there for me to understand what’s behind the curtain and what’s not prominent for my son. I’m not doing it.”
There had been some speculation in the past that Deion wouldn’t let his son play for the Giants due to the turmoil the team has found itself in over the last 10 seasons. However, that concern seemed to have been put to rest after Shedeur went viral for wearing a pair of Giants-themed cleats.
Deion explains Shedeur’s viral Giants cleats
During that same appearance on the Tamron Hall Show, Deion explained the rationale behind Shedeur’s big blue cleats, explaining that it’s not something to put much stock into:
“He has some Tennessee cleats, too. And some Raiders cleats,” Deion said. “He got every color cleats.”
Many fans took Shedeur’s cleats as an indication of where he hopes to be drafted in April. However, Deion appeared to downplay that narrative, saying Shedeur has cleats themed for all of the teams picking near the top of the draft order.

Shedeur Sanders could be the top quarterback off the board in April as many analysts project him near the top of their mock drafts. He threw for a Big 12-leading 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns in 2024 with only 10 interceptions. His 74.0% completion rate was the best in the country and his 71.8% career completion rate set an all-time career FBS/Division 1-A (or equivalent) record.
The Giants need to solve their quarterback woes. That will be priority No. 1 for general manager Joe Schoen, who was retained by ownership this offseason (to the surprise of many). He could view Shedeur Sanders as the solution to that quarterback problem. Whether or not he even gets the chance to draft the Colorado prospect, however, will be determined by the Titans and the Browns.
