The NFL draft is officially under one week away. Come Thursday night, Joe Schoen, Brian Daboll, and the rest of the Giants brass will make a franchise-altering decision with the third pick. Rumors are still floating around their plans. Pundits around the league believe the team is keying in on Penn State pass rusher Abdul Carter. Others believe that the team prefers Colorado WR/CB Travis Hunter. Yet, the team brought in quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders, Jalen Milroe, and Tyler Shough for private workouts this week.
Which Direction Will the Giants Take?
Out of the three quarterbacks, Sanders is the only one believed to be in consideration for the third overall pick. The Colorado product is widely regarded as the second-best quarterback in the draft, but his overall outlook as a prospect differs across the league. Sanders supporters believe his accuracy, toughness, and big game mentality make him a prospect as polished as likely top pick Cam Ward. His detractors believe that Sanders is a middling prospect who is only worth a flier in the late first to second round.
A private workout this late in the process suggests that internally, the Giants are split on their evaluation. One final close-up look with Sanders could sway the team to or from him. The team did the same with eventual Minnesota Vikings quarterback JJ McCarthy late in the draft process in 202,4, only to pass on him for Malik Nabers.
Are Milroe and Shough As Good As Sanders?
Furthermore, the team may like what they see from Jalen Milroe or Tyler Shough. If they do, they can likely wait until the second round to take them. It all depends on how they evaluate them as individual prospects and compare them to Sanders. The closer their evaluations of Milroe and Shough are to Sanders, the higher the chance it is that they attempt to take either of them.
Both Milroe and Shough are polarizing prospects. Milroe possesses truly elite rushing ability, but struggles as a passer. While his ceiling could be the highest of any quarterback in the draft, his floor is equally as low.
Shough, on the other hand, is a pure passer who put some excellent plays on tape in 2024. However, teams are wary of his injury history and age. He broke his collarbone in 2021 and 2022, as well as his fibula in 2023. In addition, he’ll also be 26 at the start of the 2026 season.
Is It All a Smokescreen?
Joe Schoen is accustomed to throwing off other teams with smokescreens. Just last draft, the whole league believed that the Giants were “in love” with JJ McCarthy, only to pass on him. Throughout this season, the league believed they loved Sanders. While that notion has certainly tempered, it’s a good sign for Giants fans that the team brass has not leaked any crucial information. The Giants hosting three quarterbacks for private workouts this late in the process could very well be a smokescreen. Perhaps they’re content taking the leftover between Hunter and Carter. Otherwise, the first round of the draft will be shaped on the Giants final evaluation of Sanders.
Are they Giants split on Sanders? Do they truly believe he’s a franchise quarterback? Or do they believe he’s closer to the project prospects, Milroe and Shough? Bringing three quarterbacks in for private workouts this late in the draft process is interesting. Fans will be on the edge of their seats to see what the team will do on draft night. Cam Ward and Travis Hunter are widely believed to be the first picks, so the drama begins with the Giants at pick three.
