According to Jay Glazer, Adam Schefter, and other NFL insiders, the Jets informed 4x MVP Aaron Rogers that he will not be back with the Jets in 2025. While Rogers himself has not indicated his plans for 2025, his willingness to fly to New Jersey and talk to the Jets brass hints that he still wants to play next season. Could Aaron Rogers be a realistic option for the Giants this offseason?
Rogers is coming off a down season by his standards. He’s 41 years old as he heads into what would be his 20th NFL season. A controversial figure at the least, the future Hall of Famer may want to continue to try to add to his legacy before he hangs up his cleats for good. The quarterback-needy Giants might be an attractive option in Rogers’ newest search for a fling.

The Giants’ Quarterback Situation is Unsettled
The Giants are facing a critical offseason, specifically at the quarterback position. In his end-of-season press conference, John Mara went out of his way to say that there needs to be wins and notable progress in 2025. Though he didn’t give Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll a win total that would save their jobs, it’s pretty clear that they need to assemble a team that is vastly more competitive than what they put on the field in 2024. Rogers may not be the apple of Giants’ fans’ eyes, but he does provide a starting caliber option in a do-or-die year for Big Blue. They’ve also been linked to Justin Fields, Sam Darnold, Jameis Winston, Russel Wilson, and even trades for Matthew Stafford.
In 2023, they signed Daniel Jones to a four-year extension. They cut him not even two seasons into the deal. Their only in-house option is Tommy Devito and there’s no guarantee they can land a top quarterback prospect in the draft. Even if they do, who’s to say Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders are good enough to save their jobs in the first place? Several draft experts, particularly David Syvertsen, have stated on record that this year’s quarterbacks would rank behind JJ McCarthy and Michael Penix if they had declared for last season’s draft.
Joe Schoen already announced to the NFL world that he didn’t think highly of those prospects enough to take them with the sixth pick. But he’s confident enough to take a lower-regarded prospect with the third pick in this year’s draft?
Does Rogers Make Sense?
Alternatively, finding a starting caliber option in free agency is a difficult task. Rogers is a controversial figure but, it’s not often 4x MVPs become available without a trade. Additionally, the Giants begin a season that demands progress. The team must explore every single option that can help them win. This is not necessarily advocating for Rogers. But it would be wise for the Giants to see if he can give them the best chance to win.
Signing him wouldn’t solve the team’s quarterback woes and it would only prolong their search for a true franchise starter. However, it would be a band-aid solution in the interim. Fans, coaches, and John Mara himself are certainly aware of the media distraction he can be. For that, all they need to do is look at their cross-town rivals. He will come with headaches and drama, and his play has certainly deteriorated. With all that said, his 3800 yards, 28 touchdown passes, and 11 interceptions look way better than anything the Giants quarterbacks produced in 2024.
