Joe Schoen losing a trusted advisor
As had been rumored since Mike Vrabel was announced as head coach of the New England Patriots on Sunday, New York Giants executive advisor to the GM Ryan Cowden is expected to leave the Giants and join Vrabel in New England.
The Giants will reportedly allow Cowden out of his contract to accept a position with the Patriots working under Eliot Wolf, who is the team’s executive vice president of player personnel. New England does not have a formal general manager.
Cowden worked with the Carolina Panthers from 2000-2015. Both he and Giants general manager Joe Schoen were in the Carolina scouting department for several years.
Cowden was with the Tennessee Titans front office from 2016-2022, serving as director of player personnel, vice president of player personnel and even as interim general manager in 2022. Vrabel was Titans’ head coach from 2018-2023.
Cowden interviewed for the Giants’ GM job that went to Schoen in 2022. He joined Schoen’s staff as an advisor in 2023.
