Brugler gives the Giants Travis Hunter at No. 3
The New York Giants need to find a quarterback. That is obvious. In a newly-released mock draft from Dane Brugler of The Athletic the Giants, though, pass for a second straight season on a chance to select that quarterback with their first overall pick.
In Brugler’s scenario, the Tennessee Titans select Miami quarterback Cam Ward No. 1 and the Cleveland Browns pass on Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, opting for Penn State edge defender Abdul Carter.
That leaves quarterback Shedeur Sanders sitting there for the Giants. Brugler, instead, does this:
3. New York Giants: Travis Hunter, CB/WR, Colorado
If the Giants are unable to move up for Ward, would they like Shedeur Sanders enough to draft him at No. 3? In this scenario, they don’t and instead opt for arguably the best player in the draft. Hunter would give New York an upgrade at corner — and he’d be a fun weapon for Brian Daboll to mix into the offense for the Giants’ TBD quarterback.
Sanders? He ends up going No. 6 overall to the Las Vegas Raiders in this scenario. Of Sanders, Brugler writes:
There are a ton of mixed opinions in the league about Sanders, and it will be interesting to see how (or if) that changes throughout the draft process once coaches get involved.
Valentine’s View
If you have been following Big Blue View, you know that I have mixed feelings about Sanders based on the potential distractions that come with him. On the field? I will admit that I am just beginning my real study of his play.
Based on what Cleveland does in the upcoming draft this could be the exact situation the Giants find themselves in. Indications at this early stage are that the Titans prefer Ward at No. 1. Will the Browns, who have had 40 different starting quarterbacks since 1999, like Sanders enough to take him? If not, would they trade the pick to someone who does?
If the Giants are faced with this choice, and Joe Schoen and Brian Daboll love Sanders they should take him. If they don’t, taking Hunter or moving the pick to someone who does for a bundle of draft assets is also a viable option.
It will be fascinating to watch it unfold over the next few months.
