With the 2024 NFL draft just under two weeks away, lying season has kicked into high gear. Every team is now the subject of conflicting reports and that includes the New York Giants.
At the center of the rumors surrounding Big Blue are the quarterbacks. They’ve scouted and met (or will meet) with each of the top five projected prospects and some veteran reporters believe they’re destined to select one.
But not all share that belief.
Citing a “high-ranking” team official, ESPN’s Matt Miller reports that the Giants’ draft plans are unlikely to include a first-round quarterback.
A high-ranking official with the team told me their draft plans are unlikely to include a first-round passer. However, that doesn’t rule out a quarterback being a target in Round 2, where the team owns pick No. 47. Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. and Oregon’s Bo Nix are expected to be off the board by that point, but a small trade up on Day 2 — similar to what the Titans did last year to land Will Levis at pick No. 33 — is possible.
Ironically, in the very same report, Miller’s colleague, Jordan Raanan, reports the Giants “wouldn’t hesitate to make the move” if the right quarterback is there at No. 6 overall.
Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post has heard the same whispers Raanan has but notes that Miller’s source is one worthy of attention.
My sourced belief is still that #Giants are targeting J.J. McCarthy. So, yes, draft season can be about conflicting info and who to believe.
I just give Matt credit for putting out there that his info comes from a high-ranking Giants exec. That deserves your attention. https://t.co/hVetWFLuPB

General manager Joe Schoen has also insinuated the Giants could go in a different direction than quarterback in Round 1 but stopped well short of ruling out a potential Daniel Jones successor.
The reality is that only a few select people inside the building know what the Giants’ plans are. The rest of us will just have to wait to find out on Thursday, April 25.
