As the NFL has started cracking down harder and harder on its players for sports betting, some players are started to get scared out of even making bets with each other.
This week it was reported that Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels had made a $10,000 bet with former LSU teammate and current New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers on who would win NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. But according to Mark Maske of the Washington Post, the two have decided to call off their wager after learning about the league’s stringent gambling policy.
“Malik Nabers and Jayden Daniels indeed have called off their $10,000 bet about which will win the NFL’s offensive rookie of the year award after being instructed on the league’s gambling policy, Nabers told reporters today,” Maske wrote.
The NFL has taken a stern approach to players doing any sort of sports betting, handing out suspensions like candy to anyone they’ve caught betting on sports – even non-football sports – over the past couple of off-seasons.
While nobody has received a lifetime ban like Jontay Porter did in the NBA, a number of players are on exceptionally thin ice after the suspensions they were handed.
Daniels and Nabers – understandably – don’t want to deal with that this early in their careers.
