The long-rumored hiring of defensive coordinator Steve Wilks is now a reality according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.
Wilks has held posts as a defensive coordinator in Carolina, Cleveland and San Francisco where his units ranked 11th, 20th and 3rd in points allowed respectively.
He also has head coaching experience in Arizona (2018) and the interim in Carolina (2022) where he went a combined 9-19.
New head coach Aaron Glenn has said he won’t be calling plays on defense as he’ll look to take on a larger role as head coach where he’ll oversee both the offense and the defense.
While the Jets have yet to hire a coordinator on the offensive side of the ball, it’s believed the front runner is Tanner Engstrand who was not promoted in Detroit following Ben Johnson’s departure. Rather than promote Engstrand, Dave Campbell went out and tabbed former Jets offensive coordinator John Morton to take fill the vacancy.
