The creator of the New York Jets logo has sued the team after the Jets unveiled their redesigned uniforms in April.
The uniforms feature a throwback logo that was designed by Jim Pons in 1978 and is suing the team even though they recognized Pons when they brought it back.
Per TMZ, Pons wants to be paid for using his design, which features a capital “J” in Jets. It also hints at an airplane design.
“We are aware of the complaint,” the Jets said, via the New York Post. “The mark in question has been registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for nearly 50 years. The mark has been used continuously in numerous iterations since that time. We find this claim baseless and without merit.”
Pons submitted his logo in 1978 and the team loved it so much that they had it on their uniforms until 1997. They had a different logo before bringing the one Pons designed in 2022.
They are now using it on a full-time basis and Pons wants some money for them using his design.
Time will tell if he gets his wish at some point.
