The Jets had requested an interview with the 49ers quarterbacks coach.
49ers quarterbacks coach Brian Griese was among the candidates the Jets requested to interview for their open head coaching position. According to Brian Costello of the New York Post, Griese turned down the request.
One coach the Jets requested who declined the request was 49ers quarterbacks coach Brian Griese.
I’m not sure this is necessarily groundbreaking news. Griese didn’t seem like a top tier candidate. In fact, the idea of him as an NFL head coach felt like a bit of a stretch. He only joined the coaching ranks three years ago when Kyle Shanahan hired him out of the broadcast booth. It seems plausible Griese turned down the interview simply because he didn’t think he was ready to take on the role of a head coach in the NFL. It is also possible the Jets were really speaking with Griese because they really had interest in him taking on a lower role like offensive coordinator, and framing it as a head coaching interview was the only way they could speak to him.
