Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood will become a free agent this offseason but one ESPN insider believes he could be in a new uniform. According to Jeremy Fowler, the New York Jets will probably have to embrace losing Sherwood this free agency since many projections believe he will sign a huge contract next month. Originally selected in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft, the former Auburn product took advantage of this past 2024 campaign garnering much of the attention since the injury of veteran C.J. Mosley. New York had the chance to re-sign before his breakout year but now it will become difficult for the Jets to agree on a deal after having one of the best seasons in his NFL career.
Sherwood should find a new team as the market opens after recording two sacks, three passes defended and 158 total tackles which is the most in the league last season. Since he’s been capable of putting up these types of numbers with a disastrous team, there’s no question how dominant he could be with a new roster. While two options such as the Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers might make sense, he’s going to attract a lot of teams in a potential bidding war. However, two teams like the Panthers, Chargers could go toe-to-toe as the new emerging suitors for the three-down player.

Rebuilding the Carolina Defense
The Carolina Panthers spent most of the last offseason addressing the offense for quarterback Bryce Young. It didn’t work out like the team was hoping since they will probably rebuild a new passing attack for the youngster. While they hope to re-sign Shaq Thompson, the Panthers should be in the market for a new linebacker. Thompson and Jadeveon Clowney are not getting any younger so Sherwood should make sense for their new addition. It might become harder since he’ll demand a high-end contract, but head coach Dave Canales should get creative to make this signing happen.
Sherwood has everything Carolina should be looking for in a new defensive weapon to get after the quarterback. He’s in his prime and should become the clear-cut starter to make some noise in the pass rush with Derrick Brown’s return. Carolina’s defense had one of the worst seasons but the team should do what they can to pursue Sherwood. He won’t fix everything wrong with this defense but his capabilities to play any position in the pass rusher should be unique since the depth chart for the linebacker group is bleak.
New Trenches, New Season
As much as head coach Jim Harbaugh wants to help quarterback Justin Herbert this offseason with new weapons, he’s going to make it a priority to address the defensive trenches. With Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa incoming as free agents, the Chargers should be in the best position to sign a new linebacker in case they decide to leave. However, while they hope to bring in at least Mack, the Chargers should embrace building a new pass-rush regime. Sherwood is the perfect man for this situation.
If anything, both are creative in having that same mindset to attack the offense. Since Bosa is no longer prime capable, the Chargers should take charge under Harbaugh’s new reign to build a long-lasting empire of ferocious pass rushers to potentially win a championship.
