The New York Jets know what they have in linebacker Jamien Sherwood following his breakout 2024 NFL season.
Replacing CJ Mosley for nearly all of last season, Sherwood was a tackling machine. The fourth-year pro saw his first run as a starter on defense.
He notched two sacks, three passes defended and was among football’s leading tacklers with 158 including 10 for loss. Pro Football Focus graded Sherwood as the 18th best linebacker in the entire league.
In New York, some are calling Sherwood as a must re-sign player. Much depends on the way new head coach Aaron Glenn sees him fitting into his defense.
Reportedly the Jets will have some competition for him according to ESPN. The outlet ranked Sherwood at No. 37 overall on their list of the top pending free agents in the NFL… and then some.
NFL insider Jeremy Fowler noted a few potential landing spots for Sherwood, including some with Jets connections on their coaching staff, as teams that could target him.
Fowler’s full free agency profile on Sherwood can be found below:
The tape is trending up on Sherwood after he posted 154 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 3 pass breakups with the Jets this season. Sherwood can play downhill with speed, cutting off the ball and pursuing the edges. And I see coverage upside here, too. Sherwood is a three-down player with special teams coverage ability, and his best football is ahead of him.
Fowler’s latest: Three different personnel evaluators brought up Sherwood to me unprompted when discussing the free agency class. Watch for Atlanta, which features a lot of former Jets staffing, or San Francisco, where former Jets coach Robert Saleh now runs the defense.
