Jamien Sherwood, New York Jets, Agree to Contract
Jamien Sherwood had a contract season to remember, as the fifth-round pick transformed from an overlooked depth piece to one of the league’s top linebackers in 2024. While the Jets themselves had a down season, Sherwood was a reliable presence in the middle of the defense. Starting for the first time in his career, the linebacker finished the season with three passes defended, two sacks, 158 tackles, 10 tackles-for-loss, and two quarterback hits.
Sherwood originally entered the league as a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected by the New York Jets, the Auburn product overcame his poor draft capital to earn a Week 1 starting job. Unfortunately, his success was short-lived, as the rookie suffered a season-ending Achilles injury after just five games. Sherwood recorded 15 tackles during his truncated season as the Jets struggled under rookie quarterback Zach Wilson.
The linebacker returned to the field in 2022 but couldn’t recapture his rookie form. Appearing in all 17 games without making a start, the second-year pro ended the year with 0.5 sacks, 16 tackles, one tackle-for-loss, and one quarterback hit. Despite the strong overall play of the defense, the Jets once again missed the playoffs due to ineptitude on offense.
Sherwood played better in 2023, although he didn’t recapture his former starting job. Appearing in 17 games while making just three starts, the linebacker finished with 46 tackles and three tackles-for-loss. Once again, the Jets failed to make the playoffs as four-time MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers suffered an Achilles injury of his own during the season-opening win over the Buffalo Bills.
Since signing his rookie contract, Jamien Sherwood has appeared in 56 games while making 23 starts. While on the field, the Auburn product recorded 2.5 sacks, 235 tackles, 14 tackles-for-loss, and three quarterback hits.
