The New York Jets made their split with quarterback Aaron Rodgers all but official.
According to reports over Super Bowl weekend, the Jets had reportedly told Rodgers he would no longer be the team’s QB moving forward.
Reportedly Rodgers went to New York and spoke to new head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey and he was informed of the Jets’ decision.
The team has gone on to confirm that.
It remains to be seen how the specifics of how Rodgers will be released. New York’s front office could decide to rip the bandaid off and take a large $49 million dead cap hit in 2025 or split it up over the next two years with a “post-June 1” release designation.
Regardless, new head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey have a clean slate in front of them as the duo moves into their first offseason in charge of the Jets.
Speaking of that pair, Glenn and Mougey released a joint statement on the Rodgers decision which can be found below:
“Last week we met with Aaron and shared that our intention was to move in a different direction at quarterback,” said HC Aaron Glenn and GM Darren Mougey in a statement released by the team. “It was important to have this discussion now to provide clarity and enable each of us the proper time to plan for our respective futures. We want to thank him for the leadership, passion, and dedication he brought to the organization and wish him success moving forward.”
