As you know, we ran a series of polls in July to try to assess what might happen during the 2024 season. It’s now time to see how well you did.
Let’s see how closely your votes reflected what actually happened:
Will the Jets make the playoffs?:
Most popular choice – Yes
Outcome – 87 percent of you said yes and only four said no.
Verdict – Wrong! Off to a terrible start, unlike the Jets themselves who of course were 2-1 after three weeks.
What will be the result on opening day?:
Most popular choice – Close win for the Jets
Outcome – Nope, not a win for the Jets and not close either, as it took a garbage time touchdown from Tyrod Taylor to even get it down to 13.
Verdict – Wrong! In fact, only one voter expected the Jets to get blown out.
Who will lead the Jets in receiving yards?:
Most popular choice – Garrett Wilson
Outcome – Wilson led the Jets again with 1,104 yards.
Verdict – Correct! Although even in this case, you’d have been wrong if Davante Adams arrived sooner because he was comfortably ahead in terms of yards per game.
Who will return lead the team in special teams tackles?:
Most popular choice – Irv Charles
Outcome – Chazz Surratt led the team with 11, four ahead of three other Jets, including Charles.
Verdict – Wrong! Charles was arguably the Jets’ best special teams performer but didn’t rack up as many tackles as Surratt did.
Which former draft pick will get cut?:
Most popular choice – Zack Kuntz
Outcome – Although Kuntz didn’t make the 53, he landed on the practice squad and ended up getting promoted back to the 53 by the end of the season.
Verdict – Izzy Abanikanda was actually the only former draft pick that the Jets cut ties with completely. Kuntz was strictly speaking cut though so let’s give Partial Credit!
Which non-wideout will lead the team in catches?:
Most popular choice – Breece Hall
Outcome – Hall’s pass catching output dropped, but so did Tyler Conklin’s so he ended up just six ahead of him with 57 receptions.
Verdict – Correct! Finally, you’re starting to get some right.
Who will lead the team in sacks?:
Most popular choice – Haason Reddick
Outcome – Will McDonald led the way with 10.5 sacks.
Verdict – Bahahahaha. This was so wrong we’re going to make history and for the first time ever take one point away because this was so far off.
Which Jets will be pro bowlers this year?:
Most popular choice – Quinnen Williams, Sauce Gardner, Hall (three way tie).
Outcome – No Jets made the pro bowl.
Verdict – Welp. Oh well, at least two of those three were among the six Jets named as alternates but this was triple-Wrong!
Which offensive player will have the most 100-yard games?
Most popular choice – Hall
Outcome – Wilson led the way with four.
Verdict – Hall had two – one as a rusher, one as a receiver – leaving him tied with Adams for second place (unless you count the 100-yard game Adams had with the Raiders too). Either way, Wrong!
Who will the Jets trade between now and the deadline?:
Most popular choice – Allen Lazard
Outcome – Mike Williams was traded to the Steelers.
Verdict – Williams wasn’t an option in our poll and “someone else” was the 2nd most popular choice so let’s give Partial Credit!
Who will have a thousand-yard season in 2024?:
Most popular choice – Breece Hall
Outcome – Wilson was the only player with over 1,000 yards, unless you again give Adams the credit for his Raiders yardage too.
Verdict – Hall fell short of 1,000 yards rushing once again, but did have over 1,000 yards from scrimmage. That’s not good enough, so again you are Wrong!
Who will be the most improved player on defense?:
Most popular choice – Will McDonald
Outcome – It’s a tough choice between McDonald and Team MVP Jamien Sherwood. Let’s call it a tie.
Verdict – Since none of you voted for Sherwood, we’re going to have to go with Partial Credit!
Which 2021 Jet will have the best year with his new team?:
Most popular choice – Bryce Huff
Outcome – Either Mekhi Becton or John Franklin-Myers.
Verdict – Bahahaha oh no. Sorry guys, but we’re going to have to take another point away because this was such a bad answer.
Which offseason addition will be the biggest disappointment?:
Most popular choice – Mike Williams
Outcome – Difficult decision here. Williams is a candidate, as are Reddick, Tyron Smith and Leki Fotu for differing reasons. It has to be Reddick though.
Verdict – We’ll be generous here and give Partial Credit because it was close.
Who will be the most improved player on offense?:
Most popular choice – Joe Tippmann
Outcome – Tippmann seems as good a choice as any with his PFF grade leaping 12 points to 73.
Verdict – There weren’t many other offensive players who improved. Kenny Yeboah maybe? Or guys like Max Mitchell and Allen Lazard who only really got back to their previous pre-slump levels? Tippmann is definitely the Correct choice here.
Who will lead the Jets in defensive penalties?:
Most popular choice – DJ Reed
Outcome – Reed led the team with 11, one ahead of Sauce Gardner.
Verdict – Well done – a difficult question and you were Correct in picking Reed, who had to exceed his career high to top this category. We won’t take away any credit because half of them were BS calls.
Which rookie will play the most snaps on defense?:
Most popular choice – Qwan’tez Stiggers
Outcome – Leonard Taylor III was 30 snaps ahead of Eric Watts for the lead in this category.
Verdict – Stiggers sounded like he was being prepped for a major role during training camp but his 48 defensive snaps puts him fourth out of the five rookies to see playing time on defense so you were completely Wrong!
Who will lead the team in interceptions in 2021?:
Most popular choice – DJ Reed
Outcome – Brandin Echols and Ashtyn Davis tied for the team lead with a pitiful two each.
Verdict – Reed had none. Ironic as it would be to take away another point here, we’ll let you off because he was only two away from being tied for the lead. Wrong, though.
Which offensive lineman will give up the most sacks?:
Most popular choice – John Simpson
Outcome – Tippmann and Smith were tied with five each.
Verdict – Wrong! Simpson gave them a run for their money, though, by giving up three in the last six games. They were his only three of the season, according to PFF, though (although they were very kind not to ding him for at least one other).
Which pass catcher will lead the team in targets?:
Most popular choice – Garrett Wilson
Outcome – Wilson was 40 ahead of Adams with 154 targets, although again Adams had a higher per-game rate.
Verdict – Despite the Davante disclaimer above, you got this one Correct!
Who will score the first Jets touchdown of the season?:
Most popular choice – Breece Hall
Outcome – Hall’s three-yard run gave the Jets a 7-3 lead against the 49ers and they still led midway through the second quarter.
Verdict – Correct! You did it. Good guess.
How many regular season games will the Jets win?:
Most popular choice – 11
Outcome – The Jets ended up 5-12.
Verdict – This wasn’t actually a bad guess as the Jets blew six games in the closing moments so easily could have won 11 if everything bounced their way. It would therefore only be right to consider giving you partial credit and then change that decision at the last moment to Wrong!
Who will lead the Jets in tackles?:
Most popular choice – CJ Mosley (just)
Outcome – Sherwood not only led the Jets with 158 but he also led the entire NFL in solo tackles with 98.
Verdict – Mosley had 17 in four games, so this was definitely Wrong!
Which UDFA will have the biggest impact in 2024?:
Most popular choice – Leonard Taylor III
Outcome – Taylor is a contender but Watts actually posted a higher PFF grade.
Verdict – We did say impact and Taylor had four hits, four tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks whereas Watts had none of those things. So, we’re prepared to call this one Correct!
Who will lead the Jets in quarterback hits?:
Most popular choice – Haason Reddick
Outcome – McDonald led again, whether using the definition that includes sacks (23 per NFL) or the definition that excludes them (12 per PFF).
Verdict – Reddick had just three but it would be cruel to take away another point. This was obvious Wrong though.
Who will lead the Jets in offensive penalties?:
Most popular choice – John Simpson
Outcome – Hilariously, Aaron Rodgers led the team with nine. Simpson was tied for second place among lineman, one behind Morgan Moses’ eight. To his credit, though, Moses allowed a career-low two sacks.
Verdict – Not a bad guess, but he didn’t quite make it, so this was again Wrong!
Are you ready for some football?:
Most popular choice – Yes
Outcome – We may have been, but the Jets perhaps weren’t.
Verdict – Let’s be charitable and throw you a bone. Correct!
The Final Verdict out of a possible 27 points:
8 (eight) points scored
12.5 last year, 14.5 record
Try and do better the next time…
