The New York Jets moved heaven and earth (or at least a Taylor Ham sandwich) to entice wide receiver Mike Williams to sign with their team. Unfortunately, injuries are going to keep him from joining the team for the start of training camp.
According to NFL.com, the Jets have placed Williams along with defensive tackle Leonard Taylor on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. While the move doesn’t necessarily mean that Williams won’t play at the start of the 2024 regular season, it could mean a limited snap count.
Speaking to the media a few weeks ago, Jets head coach Robert Saleh said that the time for recovery from Williams’ knee injury is similar – if not nearly identical – to what starting running back Breece Hall had between 2022 and 2023. He said that their recovery timelines should be about the same.
“He’s got a long way to go,” Saleh said in June, via The Coachspeak Index. “He’s on the same timeline that Breece had. They’re very similar injuries, same timeframe. Speaking with Mike, he knows he’s got a road to trek, but at the same time, if he does it the right way, we’re very confident that we’ll have them ready for Week 1.”
That timeframe resulted in Hall being on a limited snap count for the first four weeks of the 2023 season after missing 10 games with a torn ACL in 2022.
But the limited snap count worked to his advantage. He wound up playing every game and finished the season with the fourth-most yards from scrimmage in the NFL.
Will Mike Williams make a similar comeback from his injury?
