Aaron Rodgers said last month that his focus is “all about football” once the season starts. In his defense, the regular season hasn’t started yet.
The New York Jets quarterback missed Tuesday’s practice with an unexcused absence. Jets head coach Robert Saleh told reporters that Rodgers had “an event that was very important to him.”
Nick Wright blasted the quarterback’s early truancy.
On Tuesday’s The Herd, host Colin Cowherd recalled Rodgers saying earlier this year that the Jets need to remove all non-football distractions from the building. Wright responded by calling the quarterback’s hypocrisy “galling.”
The FS1 analyst chastised Rodgers for missing mandatory minicamp after he “lectured the whole organization” about prioritizing football. While Wright acknowledged that unavoidable circumstances happen, Saleh’s explanation made it seem clear to Wright that Rodgers “double-booked” and chose the other event over the team.
Wright gave the Jets a modicum of credit for acknowledging that Rodgers’ absence wasn’t excused, but he doesn’t think this situation bodes well for them.
“It is just so wildly disingenuous and ‘Do as I say, not as I do,'” Wright said. “I don’t know how anyone can think it’s going to get better from here for the Jets.”
Questioning the 40-year-old’s focus on football, Wright mentioned Rodgers admitting that he considered running as a vice president for presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
“The fact that that was on the board told you all you needed to know about his level of commitment to this football team at this point in his career,” Wright said, “I think it’s absolutely pitch-perfect that he can’t be bothered to attend minicamp. It’s just perfect.”
