After what was arguably their most impressive win in the last several years, the New York Jets (6-3) went right back up in the latest power rankings, stopping outside the top 10. ESPN placed them at #8, while CBS Sports had them right where they were a week before, at #14. Robert Saleh’s team is now #11 on average, two sports below their highest position (#9) two weeks ago. The Jets have a bye this week and then it’s another attempt to end the embarrassing losing streak against Bill Belichick’s Patriots (5-4). The early betting line has the Pats favored by 4 points.
Here’s what different power rankings websites had to say about the Jets:
ESPN: Williams leads all interior defensive linemen with a career-high seven sacks, according to ESPN Stats & Information. The former No. 3 overall pick has always been a good player, but he has reached a new level this season. He is a big reason the defense — the Jets’ calling card — has improved from 32nd in yards allowed in 2021 to seventh. Running back Breece Hall and guard Alijah Vera-Tucker would’ve drawn consideration had they not suffered season-ending injuries in Week 7
The Sporting News: The Jets are one of the NFL’s best stories with their youth-served defensive turnaround and gritty, physical offense based on the running game. Beating the Bills after losing to the Patriots was huge to stamp their resume.
CBS Sports: That was a huge win against the Bills. It’s time to take notice of that defense. It is top 10 and playing great football as the offense comes along.
ProFootballTalk: It’s another signature win in a year that already has more than a few of them.
Yahoo Sports: The win Sunday over the Bills legitimizes all the progress the Jets have made this season. Robert Saleh weathered the storm and a lot of (justified) criticism and now looks like a very good hire. The defense is awesome, led by Defensive Rookie of the Year favorite Sauce Gardner, who looks like the league’s next great cornerback. The Jets are in great shape to make the playoffs, and that’s one of the NFL’s best stories this season.
NFL.com: A week after a disappointing loss to the Patriots, the Baby Jets put together their most complete effort of the season in an upset of the mighty Bills. The defense was again outstanding, forcing Josh Allen into two interceptions while regularly putting the heat on the star quarterback. Allen was sacked five times and fumbled twice, routinely harassed by a defense that rarely blitzed but kept getting home. Fittingly, Allen’s desperation final heave in the final minute was swatted away by cornerback Sauce Gardner, playing like an All-Pro just nine games into his career. Throw in a composed, bounce-back performance by Zach Wilson, and this was close to a perfect day for Gang Green.
USA Today: Their social media team took a nice shot at Buffalo following Sunday’s big upset. The NYJ will be in Western New York soon enough (Week 14), but they love road trips – currently 4-0, tied with Philadelphia for best mark away from home.
