The oft-injured veteran presents an uninspiring in-house solution at quarterback
After two years of building around quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the New York Jets face a new challenge of building without Rodgers after the team announced its plan to move on from the future hall of fame signal caller.
The quarterback chosen in place of Rodgers will almost certainly be a flawed option. Indeed, the “perfect” option at quarterback rarely presents itself, and this offseason is no different. The Jets, and many other teams, will be left with the rather unenviable decision of choosing between a veteran that is available because other teams deemed them “not good enough” or a rookie with uncertainty.
Among the former group is Tyrod Taylor, who is already on the Jets roster. According to Tony Pauline of SportsKeeda, Taylor is not only being considered but that the team is “ready to go” with Taylor as their starter. Pauline’s full report stated:
People who have met with the New York Jets tell me the team is ready to go into the season with Tyrod Taylor as its starting quarterback, but the Jets will look to draft their signal caller of the future on Day 2 of this year’s draft. Taylor’s history is one where he’s had great success as a spot starter in the league.
As Pauline noted, Taylor’s career has mostly seen him in a spot starter role. Despite that, he’s been quite productive when he does get the chance to play based on his career stats, which are as follows:
- Completion rate: 61.9%
- Yards per attempt: 7.0
- QB rating: 88.9
- TD:INT ratio: 12:5
While far from spectacular, they are respectable stats. If the Jets were to opt for Taylor, then a strong run game would become a near necessity if the Jets intend to make the playoffs in 2025.
