Maybe DJ Reed isn’t as ready to move on to the next chapter as he’d suggested just weeks ago? When the Jets announced the hiring of Aaron Glenn as their new head coach, there were a few reactions from Jets players that told us the hire went over well.
Quinnen Williams, Braelon Allen, Jermaine Johnson and Michael Carter all praised the move. Former teammates also took the time to praise and congratulate Glenn. From Victor Green to Ray Mickens and Marvin Jones. Current ESPN analyst and former Jets tackle Damien Woody talked about how many former Jets were thrilled for Glenn.
But one surprise comment came from free agent cornerback DJ Reed who said “Glenn is a great look”.
The surprise of course isn’t due to his take on Glenn, but in that he has a take at all. Having said prior to the team’s final game of the season that he was looking forward to no longer being a Jet, why take the time to praise the team’s decision? Is Reed considering a possible return?
The intrigue on the part of Reed would make sense as his new coach wouldn’t just be on the defensive side of the ball, but a player who, like him, was viewed as an undersized cornerback who managed to prove the doubters wrong and have a great career.
Given what Reed is likely to command in free agency it’s unlikely he’ll be back in 2025, but if he’s open to the possibility, is it something the team should consider?
Of course fans were miffed at Reed’s honesty in wanting to move on, but let’s be honest here. At the end of the day, Reed is a human being. But not just any human being. He’s one who has played at a very high level for much of his time as a Jet, only to do nothing but lose.
If the losses piling up and the chaos inside the building at 1 Jets drive got to be a little much could anyone blame him?
At the end of the day he’s a very good player who was a big reason for the Jets defensive dominance in 2022 and 2023. If he wants to be a Jet in 2025, they’d be silly to not consider it at the very least.
