Woody Johnson has given Jets reason to despair
Kids tease. It’s what kids do. As a kid, one of the teases that I remember, being a big New York Jets fan, was “Just End The Season.” This was meant to reflect that the New York Jets were a very bad football team.
I was born in 1995 so this never really made much sense to me. The Jets weren’t a bad team when I was growing up. They regularly made the playoffs. They were competitive most weeks. The “Just End The Season” joke thus always kind of bothered me because it seemed to stem more from convenience than that my team was actually bad.
This week though, I found myself say it. Funny enough, I said it without even really thinking about the longstanding joke. What happened was on Sunday my fiancé asked “Do the Jets play today?” and I responded “I wish they’d just end the season,” because the idea of watching this team play even one more minute of patently futile football sounded like an awful way to spend even a minute of my Sunday.
So, hey, thanks to team owner Woody Johnson. Your oversight of the team has officially taken the sting out of the “Just End The Season” joke. It’s gone from ribbing between friends to a self-made call for mercy. Well done.
