The New York Jets added another quarterback at the start of training camp.
New York signed Ben Bryant on Wednesday morning. Bryant went undrafted following his sixth collegiate season.
After three years as an understudy at Cincinnati, Bryant completed 68.4 percent of his passes as Eastern Michigan’s starting quarterback in 2021. He transferred back to Cincinnati and led the Bearcats to a 9-2 record with 21 touchdown passes.
Bryant used his final year of eligibility at Northwestern. Down by 21 after three quarters, he led the Wildcats to an overtime win over Minnesota with 396 passing yards and four touchdowns.
Although he’s a rookie, Bryant is only one month younger than Zach Wilson. After a rocky season replacing the injured Aaron Rodgers, the Jets traded the 2021 first-round pick to the Denver Broncos this offseason.
To the frustration of many fans, the Jets stuck with Wilson rather than acquiring a more accomplished signal-caller to run the offense. They’ll be more prepared this time if anything happens to Rodgers.
New York signed Tyrod Taylor, an experienced veteran who has posted an 88.3 quarterback rating for six teams over 13 seasons. He spent the last two years on the New York Giants, where he replaced a sidelined Daniel Jones before injuring his ribs in a Week 8 loss to the Jets.
The Jets also drafted former Florida State star Jordan Travis in the fifth round and signed undrafted free agent Andrew Peasley. That would seemingly make Bryant a long shot to make the roster out of training camp, but they had an open roster spot after placing Haason Reddick on the reserve/did not report list.
