The New York Jets made moves last offseason to beef up their offensive line, and when they were healthy, you saw glimpses of what their potential as a unit could be.
Unfortunately, they weren’t healthy for much of the season, and because of that they performed in the middle-of-the-pack in terms of offensive line play compared to the rest of the NFL.
In Pro Football Focus’ final offensive line rankings for the 2024 season, the Jets came in at number 17.
Tackle Tyron Smith, a four-time All-Pro, was brought in from the Dallas Cowboys to protect Aaron Rodgers’ blindside. He missed seven games to injury.
Tackle Morgan Moses was also brought in, a veteran from the Baltimore Ravens who played for the Jets in 2021. He missed three games. Guard Alijah Vera-Tucker also missed two games. Rookie first round pick Olumuyiwa Fashanu was thrust into action due to the injuries.
The Jets offensive line was a unit that on paper looked like one of the best in the NFL. They had plenty of talent, but age, injury, and a lack of time together probably played into their inconsistencies.
Here is how the Jets offensive line was graded by PFF this year:
- LT Tyron Smith: 73.7.
- LG John Simpson: 77.3.
- C Joe Tippmann: 73.4.
- RG Alijah Vera-Tucker: 77.7.
- RT Morgan Moses: 63.3.
PFF’s full breakdown of the 2024 Jets offensive line can be found below:
While the Jets’ offensive line looked like it could be a top-five unit on paper, injuries derailed their season. Neither of the veteran offensive tackles whom they brought in prior to the season managed to top 800 snaps this season, while right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker also struggled with injuries.
Still, the Jets’ offensive line generated an 87.2 PFF pass-blocking efficiency rating, which ranked seventh in the NFL. The unit surrendered 145 pressures — including 26 sacks — on 668 pass plays.
