On the idea of pushing to sign Dawson Mercer to a long-term deal: “The 22-year-old restricted free agent is coming off a disappointing 2023-24 campaign in which he produced 16 fewer points than he averaged over the first two years of his career. His underlying metrics fell off a cliff as well. While a step in the wrong direction may give the Devils pause about racing to extend Mercer to a long-term deal, you could argue this buy-low opportunity is the perfect time to strike.” [Infernal Access ($)]
“Barring something unforeseen, the Devils seem to be betting on Siegenthaler bouncing back next season. It’s probably the right decision, and with some uncertainty on the left side of the blue line, they need it to happen.” [Devils on the Rush ($)]

“Many NHL deals work out nicely for both sides with a fair trade of funds and on-ice performance. However, even seemingly lucrative NHL deals can turn into nightmares when a player underperforms, and five specific players in today’s NHL possess some of the most untradeable contracts on the market.” [The Hockey News]
