Jack Hughes on last season: “We weren’t a hard team to play against. You know, you get a taste of the playoffs, you win a series, and you think you’re going to be in the playoffs every year. It doesn’t work like that. It’s hard to get back to the playoffs.” [Sportsnet]
“New Jersey still has one of the best young cores in the league, headlined by Jack and Luke Hughes, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt, Dawson Mercer, and Simon Nemec. They also made significant moves this offseason to address the issues that prevented them from reaching the playoffs this past spring. In a division that featured the two weakest teams to qualify for the postseason in 2023-24, the Devils should be more than capable of returning to prominence as soon as this year.” [Daily Faceoff]

He also said he can see a day when neck guards are mandatory in the NHL and that he’s expecting the 2026 Olympics to be played without Russian NHL stars.” [The Athletic ($)]
