Islanders News: Training camp begins

The Isles have some new faces, an old face hanging on, and a health question in goal.

And we’re here! The Islanders on-ice training camp begins today. May the line combo arguments begin continue.

Around the league, there are a few expected long-term injuries that will keep players out, sometimes for good. And then on Long Island there is the question of how Ilya Sorokin will respond after offseason surgery.

Some rule changes for this season, including an update to coach’s challenges (allowing challenging the “over the glass” delay of game rule), and an adjustment to when replacement goalies are allowed a wee warmup:

• Old friend Robin Lehner, still out with injury, did not show for the mandatory preseason medical so the final year of his contract may be at risk. Poor Vegas is definitely due some cap relief… [Daily Faceoff]

• The Capitals’ TJ Oshie continues to deal with back issues and is not ready to come back, possibly ever. [Capitals]
• Meanwhile Jeremy Swayman is not at Bruins camp, but that is self-inflicted by both parties rather than injury-related. [NHL]
• Putting them all to shame, at age 52 Jaromir Jagr starts his 37th pro season in Kladno and logs an assist in 14:28 of ice time. [NHL]

• Bell Media has sold its stake in the Leafs to Rogers, but the deal includes a 20-year access to Leafs content. [TSN]
• Mitch Marner is ready for a big walk year, though he hopes to stay in Toronto, though neither he nor the Leafs will be fielding contract questions. [TSN]
