A conversation we would have had even if we didn’t record it as a podcast.
Mike and Dan make their picks to each create a team of Weird Islanders from the past 25 years.
It’s been quite a journey for the team since 2000, from highs and lows to mercenaries and stalwarts to kids and veterans and three home arenas. And through all of it there were weird players who only wore the blue-and-orange for a short time. So we each put together a starting six based on gut feelings, good memories and attempted representation of where the Islanders were as a franchise at the time. Some we’ve talked about before and some are new but all of them made an impression despite quick exits.
From big playoff goals to unmet expectations to truly anonymous players to first round picks to bad facial hair, we cover a lot of ground to build the best rosters we can from the Weirdest Islanders we could find.
And we want to hear from you! Who do you think built the better team? We didn’t make it easy on ourselves (because we almost never do and it’s the Islander way).
WEIRD BONUS MATERIAL!
- Here’s the “actual” Islanders Quarter Century Team. Congrats to Kenny Jonsson for representing 2000-2009.
- Gonna try to keep these a secret. Here’s two Islanders legends going at it (one obviously wasn’t an Islander at the time).
- Here’s a second fight that ends up with a full jersey over the head. Always hilarious.
- Two more Islanders throwing hands early in a season. Man, what is it about former Islanders fighting each other?
- Mike was in the building for this momentous occasion.
- And this playoff goal still makes the hairs on my arms stand up.
What makes a “Weird Islander?”
We’re always open to suggestions about other Weird Islanders to discuss. Remember the criteria. Candidates must fulfill one of the two of the following:
- Played one (1) season or less for the Islanders or very short stints over multiple seasons.
- Be a veteran NHLer who is not generally associated with his time on Islanders.
